The key to assessing children is observation and documentation. The directresses of the classroom are trained to observe without intervening, to demonstrate again (if needed) and continue to observe and document. The documentation helps to gauge the children’s progress from past to present although it is not something that is shared with the children. At Spokane Montessori we observe and document daily and meet with families for parent/teacher conferences twice per year. We are also happy to meet with families based on necessity. At the end of a three-year cycle the children typically show complete readiness to move on to first grade.
