Our Story

What is the history of Spokane Montessori School?

Spokane Montessori Preschool & Kindergarten

Meredith Lombardi is the Owner and Director of Spokane Montessori School.

She was hired by the original owner, Hope Caprye Boos, and has been working at the school since 1995. In 1999 Hope’s children, Mike and Peggy Caprye, acquired the school and continued to make improvements and grow the program.

Meredith purchased the school in September 2011 and is eager to continue running a strong full day Montessori program that supports the needs of children and their families.

Spokane Montessori is home to four certified Montessori teachers and two assistants with Montessori background. We are very fortunate to have such a committed and well-educated staff.

We are always working towards following the Montessori philosophy.

This means that we prepare the environment, give demonstrations, observe the child at work, document the work that is being done and start all over again. The preparation goes on forever and is constantly changing. No Montessori teacher just learns how to “do it”. It is a continuing cycle.

In our school, education is not something the teacher does, but is a natural process, which develops spontaneously in the child – if we have done our preparation well. The child learns chiefly by acting on the environment rather than by just listening to the words of the teacher.

Montessori has found that individual activity is the one factor that stimulates and produces development, so most of our day is spent in independent work and lessons. Most parents report seeing much growth in all areas of their children’s development after being at our school.
